Quiet: A Reminder to Slow Down

The Book

This book tells the story of a grandfather, his granddaughter, and his grandson as they go outside and begin to notice the world around them. In a world that is loud and fast, this book reminds us that "To be quiet and still is a special thing.”

Why I Love It

This is another picture book that found its way back into my hands exactly when I needed it. Over the past year I have had a third child (who really has never been a great sleeper), edited the novel I wrote, given that manuscript to several beta readers to receive thoughtful feedback, continued to grow and develop this blog, begun to start building more of an author brand with my instagram account, and maintained a household with two preschoolers and a husband who is out of the house working from 4:45am to 7:15pm most days. To say I could use a change of pace and should slow down is an understatement. I happened to read this book with my girls while sitting at River Farm most recently, listening to the birds chirping above us in the trees and feeling the beauty of the flowers surrounding us. The moments of reading this particular story in that particular spot on that particular day will stay with me for a long time.

Questions to Ask While Reading

What kinds of things do you hear when you are quiet? Let’s sit quietly for two whole minutes, then share what we think we heard.

Can you name some places where you are supposed to be quiet? Why do you think we should be quiet there?
