What the Road Said: A Beautiful Book for Any Season
The Book
What the Road Said is a story about a girl who discovers a new road in front of her almost as if by magic. She had been wondering if there were something more or different when the road appeared before her. As she approaches the road, she begins to ask questions. Questions like Where do you lead? What if I go the wrong way? What if I get lost? The road answers her with wisdom along the way.
Why I Love It
My five year old daughter recently returned from a book store visit with my mom following her piano lesson. She brought this book home for her younger sister, sharing that it was one of her favorite books from school. Honestly, I can’t believe I hadn’t heard of it before.
As we sat down to read it together, I felt like the road was speaking directly to me. As anyone who has been brave enough to take those first steps down a new road will know, it is scary and uncertain to try new things. Especially when you found success with the old things. But then, isn’t that just life?
I love this book for my kids because it is filled with age-old wisdom and advise for them as they grow. It reminds me of Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss, but this book is a modern version with more direct and straightforward advice. I love it for myself because I read it exactly when I needed it.
Questions to Ask While Reading
Have you ever been scared or nervous when you tried something new?
What helps you when you’re feeling that way?
Can you think of someone you know who is a leader? What makes them one?
My Favorite Page
I’ll leave you with a quote from my favorite page of the book…
What if they want to fight?
Lead them to peace, said the Road.
But how do I lead them to peace?
By listening to their stories, telling them yours, and reminding them that you are all on this journey together.
You can grab your copy of this book here or at your local book store or library. I hope that reading it with your little ones moves you as much as it moved me.
