Book Review: The Diamond Eye

My sister-in-law gifted me a copy of The Diamond Eye for Christmas. My TBR (to be read) pile was too long, so I only now got around to it, and let me tell you, I am so glad I did. In case you are unfamiliar with Kate Quinn, she is an author of historical fiction, and most of her books center around remarkable women who defied stereotypes. The Diamond Eye is no exception.

Mila Pavlichenko is a young mother and graduate student of history in the Soviet Union when German troops invade her country in 1937. She is an excellent markswoman, and she quickly decides to join the Russian army and becomes one of history’s deadliest snipers. Throughout the war she faces constant underestimation, disrespect, violence, love, and incredible loss. When word of her 300th kill makes the news, Mila is sent to the United States of America on a goodwill tour, where she befriends the First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Mila’s past catches up with her here, and she must face a deadly new foe as well as her own demons as she works to protect herself and those around her.

This is a great book for lovers of historical fiction, strong female characters, and explorations of heroism and bravery. I highly recommend it, and I give it 5/5 stars.
