The Book

James Otis knows what it’s like not having much, but he knows he has to find a little bit of something to share with Sarah, whose family has lost everything in a fire. This is a heartfelt picture book about the power of kindness and the joy of giving.

Why I Love It

As parents and teachers we find ourselves talking to our kids about giving at least once a year (and probably much more often than that), but meaningful giving is not an easy concept for kids to understand. I love the way that this book does not shy away from the hardships some kids are forced to face in life (i.e. the loss of a parent and losing everything in a fire). I equally love that this book does not make those circumstances defining characteristics for the characters. They are simply things that happen to them. Patricia McKissack presents meaningful giving in a way that is accessible to kids. This is a great book for anyone who could use a lesson in compassion, meaningful giving, or gratitude.

Questions to Ask While Reading

Can you think of anyone who might need something in our community? In your classroom? In our family?

What is something you could give that person that might come from the heart?

Is there anyone outside of our family you think we should pray for tonight?

Can you think of something that has brought you joy that you might be able to share with someone else? (This could also be a great lead-in to giving away old toys or shopping for other children in need around the holidays.)
