Book Review: Whistler

This book was everything I hoped it would be and more. I was so excited when I learned that Ann Patchett had a new novel coming out this year. She is one of my favorite authors. She is well-renowned for the beauty of her writing. I do understand when some readers find her books too wandering and reflective (I do not find them to be so, but I can see how other readers would), but this book does not fit that narrative. It has all the beauty and reflection I expect from her coupled with a plot that read like a movie.

This is the story of Daphne Fuller, a high school English teacher, who unexpectedly reunites with her long-lost step-father many years after her mother divorced him and he exited their lives. I found both Daphne and her step-father Eddie Triplett to be lovable and memorable characters. They made their way into my heart, and I trust that they will stay there for a long time.

I truly recommend this novel to anyone who loves beautiful writing, an interesting story, stories about complex relationships, or all of the above. For me, this book was perfection. It is tied with The Correspondent as my favorite novel so far this year. I highly recommend it, and I’d say it pairs well with quiet evenings, tea, or a lovely glass of Sancerre.
